We remember what those early days were like when Clear Life Cleaning began back in 1999. Many of our first clients had never hired a cleaning service before. They were a little unsure, maybe even a little uncomfortable with the idea of someone else cleaning their home. That is completely normal.
If you are thinking about hiring a house cleaner for the first time, here is what we wish every homeowner knew going in.
It is okay to feel weird about it
Letting someone into your home to clean feels personal, because it is. You are trusting a stranger with your private space, your belongings, and the place where your family lives. That feeling of hesitation is healthy. It means you care about who you let in.
The right cleaning service understands that and takes it seriously. We do background checks on every team member, and we treat every home like it is our own.
What to look for in a cleaning service
Experience matters. There is a huge difference between someone who has been cleaning for 6 months and someone who has been doing it for years. Experience teaches you which products work on which surfaces, how to be efficient without cutting corners, and how to handle the unexpected.
Ask about estimates. A reputable service will want to see your home before giving you a price. If someone quotes you over the phone without ever seeing the space, that is a red flag. Every home is different, and we want to give you an honest, accurate number tailored to your preferences.
Look for consistency. The best cleaning services have clients who have been with them for years. Ask how long their longest clients have been around. If the answer is a few months, that tells you something. Our longest clients have been with us for over 13 years.
Communication style. Pay attention to how they communicate before you even hire them. Are they responsive? Do they answer your questions clearly? Do they seem like someone you would be comfortable having in your home? That first interaction tells you a lot.
What to expect from the first visit
The first cleaning usually takes longer than the ones after it. This is normal. The cleaner is learning your home, your layout, and your preferences. They are also likely doing a more thorough clean than a standard visit because they are establishing a baseline.
After the first one or two visits, things settle into a rhythm. Your cleaner knows where things are, knows your preferences, and can move through the space more efficiently.
How to prepare
You do not need to clean before the cleaner comes. That is what we are there for. But a few things help:
- Pick up personal items off the floor. Clothes, shoes, toys. We need to be able to access the surfaces.
- Mention any areas you want special attention on. Maybe your kitchen gets heavy use, or your bathrooms need extra care. Just let us know.
- Tell us about pets. We love animals, but it helps to know if there is a dog who might follow us around or a cat who does not like strangers.
- Secure valuables. Not because your cleaning service would take anything, but for your own peace of mind, especially on the first visit.
What about supplies and equipment?
This varies by service. We bring everything ourselves. Our own vacuum, our own mop, our own cleaning products. You do not need to have anything ready for us. That is part of what you are paying for: a completely handled experience.
Some services ask you to provide supplies. There is nothing wrong with that, but make sure you know ahead of time so you are not caught off guard.
How often should you schedule?
Most of our clients are on recurring schedules. Weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly are the most common. Here is how we usually think about it:
- Weekly works best for busy families, homes with kids or pets, or anyone who wants their home to feel consistently clean.
- Bi-weekly is the most popular option. It keeps things fresh without feeling like a lot.
- Monthly is good for people who maintain their homes well between visits and just want a thorough refresh once a month.
You can always start with one option and adjust. Most people find their rhythm within the first month or two.
The most important thing
Find someone you trust. That is really what this comes down to. The right cleaning service will communicate well, show up reliably, do thorough work, and treat your home with respect. Everything else is details.
